“A common misconception about retail is that it’s just about apparel, its just for those people seeking a career working with clothes. But that’s really not the case. This degree provides you an opportunity to seek a job in any field of business that sales a product or a service. Looking further into the degree, retailing provides you with a core business minor. You still have a set of business classes and you build on top of that. You study in depth how the consumer thinks; how a customer works inside a store or what goes through their mind when looking at a product… you focus on promotion, you focus on marketing and merchandising, and you focus on what it takes to really run a store and what a person has to do to work with people every day. So, retailing is not just about clothes, it’s about business as a whole.”

“One thing that I will say about the major of retail and consumer sciences is that you are exposed to several different aspects of business; you are exposed to several different opportunities. You get to speak with marketing executives, CEOs and present real-world solutions to problems they have in business today. You learn some many different facets of business that it makes you a lot more marketable to a company…”

“The reason why I chose this major was because I was interested in the fashion industry, but I also realized that there’s so many more directions you can take with this major. I have been a part of management, buying, planning, product development and many more opportunities. I work part-time at Old Navy and I was also a management intern this summer at Macy’s. And what’s really great about that is you get to see the correlation between your work experiences and what you are learning in the classroom… I really think that my relationships with the faculty and the opportunities that I’ve had will really prepare me for success after college.”

“To me the retail program at UT is about having professors who are dedicated to providing the students with experiences and opportunities to make us successful in our careers upon graduation. In May of 2008, I was fortunate enough to participate in the international retail tour where I went to Poland and the Czech Republic and I learned about the retail industry in Poland and how it is different from the US. I think from that opportunity I was able to obtain an internship in global sourcing for the Walt Disney company… Overall, these experiences and everything I have learned throughout these four years have provided me with an education that will really give me success in my career upon graduation.”
